Sono stati svelati i vincitori dei premi VMAs 2022 nel corso della cerimonia di premiazione che ha celebrato i più grandi nomi della musica domenica 28 agosto al Prudential Center del New Jersey. Jack Harlow ha dominiato la serata con 4 premi, seguito da Lil Nas X e Taylor Swift con 3 riconoscimenti. Tra i performer: Eminem e Snoop Dogg, BLACKPINK, Jack Harlow, Lizzo, Måneskin, Anitta, J Balvin, Marshmello x Khalid, Panic! At The Disco e Nicki Minaj. L'evento è stato trasmesso in diretta sui canali MTV lineari e digitali in contemporanea in oltre 170 paesi, oltre che in simulcast su The CW Network, BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TVLand e VH1. In Italia, lo show è andato in onda in diretta nella notte tra il 28 e il 29 agosto a partire dalle ore 02:00 su MTV (canale Sky 131 e su NOW) e su MTV Music (canale Sky 132 e 704) anticipato dal pre show. I presentatori

I vincitori del Video Vanguard Award LL COOL J e Nicki Minaj, insieme al rapper Jack Harlow, hanno condotto e introdotto i momenti più importanti della serata. A loro il compito di annunciare l'elenco di artisti, presentatori e vincitori dello show, adottando un approccio più innovativo e unico rispetto al tradizionale ruolo di "conduttore" visto negli anni precedenti.

Tre volte candidato ai VMAs, LL COOL J ha vinto come "Miglior video rap" nel 1991 per "Mama Said Knock You Out", LL COOL J ha ricevuto il Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award nel 1997. Il rapper, cantautore e attore si è esibito per la prima volta ai "VMAs" nel 1991 e di nuovo nel 1996. La sua ultima apparizione come presentatore risale al 2000. Il rapper Jack Harlow ha ricevuto 7 nomination quest'anno, tra cui "Artista dell'anno" e "Video dell'anno", portando a 10 le nomination ai VMAs della sua carriera dal 2020. Ha fatto anche il suo debutto come solista ai "VMAs".

Nelle edizioni precedenti, lo show ha visto alternarsi nel ruolo di conduttore un gran numero di star, tra cui Doja Cat (2021), l'attrice Keke Palmer (2020), il comico Sebastian Maniscalco (2019) e Katy Perry (2017). 

I Performer

La carismatica artista pop globale Anitta ha fatto il suo debutto sul palco principale dei "VMAs" con una prima esibizione televisiva del suo ultimo singolo in vetta alle classifiche, "Envolver", che ha recentemente fatto guadagnare alla superstar brasiliana la certificazione del Guinness dei Primati come prima artista latina solista a raggiungere il primo posto su Spotify. Anitta è stata anche in lizza per il suo primo Moon Person nella categoria "Best Latin", diventando così la prima artista brasiliana ad essere nominata per un Moon Person. La superstar colombiana J Balvin ha fatto un ritorno infuocato sul palco dei "VMAs" con la prima televisiva/mondiale di "Nivel de Perreo" con Ryan Castro, dopo la sua collaborazione sul palco con Bad Bunny per "Que Pretendes" nel 2019.

Marshmello e Khalid hanno conquistato insieme l'iconico palco di MTV per una performance televisiva in anteprima mondiale della nuova collaborazione "Numb". Marshmello – candidato per cinque volte ai "VMAs" – ha fatto il suo debutto sul palco principale quest'anno. Khalid ha fatto ritorno sul palco dei "VMAs" per la prima volta dopo il suo debutto nel 2017 con Logic e Alessia Cara per "1-800-273-8255", dove si è aggiudicato anche il premio come miglior nuovo artista.

I Panic! At The Disco sono tornati sul palco dei "VMAs" per la prima volta dal 2018, per presentare in anteprima mondiale il loro nuovo singolo "Middle of a Breakup", brano che dà il titolo al prossimo album Viva Las Vengeance. I 9 volte candidati, che hanno vinto per la prima volta nel 2005 per il "Video of the Year", hanno cercato di portare a casa anche una vittoria per " Alternative Video", la loro prima nomination in questa categoria.

Le BLACKPINK hanno fatto il loro debutto negli Stati Uniti con una performance di "Pink Venom", dal vivo sul palco. Nel 2020, sono entrate nella storia come primo girl group K-Pop a portare a casa un Moon Person ("Song of the Summer") e sono riuscite a portarne a casa un secondo nella nuova categoria "Best Metaverse Performance". LISA, membro del gruppo, è anche la prima star femminile del K-Pop e solista coreana ad essere mai stata nominata. Dopo il debutto ai "VMAs" della hit "Industry Baby" con Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow ha fatto ritorno sul palco di MTV per la sua prima esibizione da solista. A pari merito con il maggior numero di nomination di quest'anno (7), tra cui due dei premi più importanti della serata, "Video of the Year" e "Artist of the Year", Harlow ha cercato di portare a casa il suo primo Moon Person. Il 10 volte candidato è stato nominato per la prima volta nel 2020 per "PUSH New Artist" e "Song of the Summer", e di nuovo per "Song of the Summer" nel 2021. Dopo un debutto con un mashup di "Good As Hell" e "Truth Hurts" nel 2019, Lizzo ha fatto ritorno quest'anno sul palco di MTV con una performance di "2 Be Loved" dal suo nuovo album Special. L'11 volte candidata è stata anche in corsa per quattro premi quest'anno, tra cui "Artista dell'anno" e "Canzone dell'anno". Dopo una performance e la vittoria come "Best Rock" agli MTV "EMAs" del 2021, i Måneskin continuano a guidare la rinascita del rock a livello globale e hanno fatto quest'anno il loro debutto ai "VMAs" con il singolo alternativo "SuperModel". Il gruppo è stato anche in lizza per due premi – "Best New Artist" e "Best Alternative" – con quest'ultimo vinto.

Eminem e Snoop Dogg sono stati sul palco dei VMAs 2022 con la loro collaborazione "From the D 2 The LBC" in una performance ispirata al mondo del metaverso Otherside, e creata in collaborazione con Yuga Labs. Eminem e Snoop Dogg erano in lizza per il "Best Hip Hop" con "From The D 2 The LBC", la prima collaborazione tra le due star dell'hip hop in oltre 20 anni. Eminem si è esibito per la prima volta dopo 12 anni dall'ultima volta con "Not Afraid" e "Love the Way You Lie" nel 2010. Eminem, che ha ricevuto 60 nomination, è il secondo artista con più nomination nella storia dei VMAs, secondo solo a Madonna con 69 nomination. Eminem ha vinto 13 volte, diventando il secondo artista più nominato nella storia dei VMAs e uno dei 5 artisti con il maggior numero di vittorie. Recentemente ha pubblicato il suo secondo album di greatest hits, "Curtain Call 2". Snoop Dogg si è esibito per la prima volta sul palco dei "VMAs" dopo 17 anni, l'ultima volta con Diddy e Notorious B.I.G. nel 2005. L'artista, 13 volte candidato, ha vinto tre volte, compreso il suo primo anno di nomination per "Best Rap Video" (1994) con "Doggy Dogg World".

L'artista Kane Brown è stato headliner del Toyota Stage con uno show di Mixed Reality offerto da The Famous Group (l'azienda di tecnologia creativa dietro le attivazioni della Mixed Reality nel Super Bowl, nell'All-Star Game della MLB e nello Slime Game della NFL Wild Card su Nickelodeon) in cui ha proposto la sua prima esibizione televisiva di "Grand", il nuovo singolo tratto dal suo terzo album Different Man, in uscita il 9 settembre. Brown entra nella storia dei "VMAs" come primo artista country solista ad esibirsi in questo show. Nel 2021, è stato l'unico artista country a ricevere una nomination ai "VMAs", 2021 ("Video for Good" per il suo singolo "Worldwide Beautiful"). I fan sono stati accompagnati in un viaggio musicale da New York City al New Jersey a bordo di una Toyota Corolla Cross, con la hit di Kane Brown "Be Like That" a fare da colonna sonora al viaggio, fino alla sua performance sul Toyota Stage.

A Nicki Minaj il Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award

Nicki Minaj ha ricevuto il Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award di MTV e si è esibita per la prima volta dal 2018 ai "VMAs" del 2022. La 17 volte nominata e 5 volte vincitrice dei "VMAs", che ha portato a casa il suo primo "Moon Person" per il "Best Hip Hop Video" nel 2011, è stata nominata quest'anno per il "Best Hip Hop". Negli anni successivi, Minaj ha continuato a dominare nella categoria Best Hip Hop, ottenendo altre due vittorie per "Big Bang" (2015) e "Chun-Li" (2018). Minaj si è aggiudicata anche il premio per il Miglior video femminile nel 2012 per "Starships". Più di recente, ha ottenuto un Moon Person nel 2019 per il miglior inno power ("Hot Girl Summer").

Tra i precedenti vincitori del Vanguard Award figurano Madonna, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Jennifer Lopez e Missy Elliott. David Bowie, i Beatles e il regista Richard Lester hanno condiviso l'onore in occasione della prima edizione dei VMA (1984).

Minaj ha fatto il suo debutto sul palco dei "VMAs" nel 2012, rappando a sorpresa una strofa su "Girl on Fire" di Alicia Keys, ed è tornata con una tripletta di esibizioni nel 2014, prima portando i fan nella giungla amazzonica con "Anaconda", poi facendo squadra con Ariana Grande e Jessie J per un'esibizione di "Bang Bang" e infine "She Came To Give It To U" con Usher. Nel 2015, Nicki si è nuovamente esibita in un trio di canzoni, prima con "Trini Dem Girls" e poi portando sul palco Taylor Swift per "The Night Is Still Young" e "Bad Blood". Nel 2016 si è riunita con Ariana Grande per "Side To Side" e nel 2017 si è unita alla conduttrice Katy Perry per una performance di "Swish Swish". L'ultima precedente apparizione di Nicki ai "VMA" ha incluso un medley rap dal suo album Queen, con le canzoni "Majesty", "Ganga Burn", "FEFE" e "Barbie Dreams" allo show del 2018. 

Le nomination

Jack Harlow, Kendrick Lamar e Lil Nas X hanno guidato le nomination di quest'anno (con 7 nomination ciascuno), seguiti da Doja Cat e Harry Styles (6 ciascuno), e Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift e The Weeknd (5 ciascuno).

In testa al gruppo con 7 nomination, Jack Harlow e Lil Nas X hanno ricevuto nomination multiple con la collaborazione "INDUSTRY BABY", che ha debuttato dal vivo in anteprima mondiale sul palco "VMAs" 2021, insieme a Kendrick Lamar, nominato per la prima volta dal 2018. Madonna, tra gli artisti più premiati nella storia di MTV con 20 vittorie, è l'unica ad essere stata nominata in ciascuno dei cinque decenni in cui si sono tenuti i "VMAs" (1980-2020), guadagnando la sua 69a nomination con l'album "MADAME X".

Quest'anno, 26 nuovi candidati per la prima volta, tra cui Baby Keem (4), l'artista MTV PUSH GAYLE (2), Kacey Musgraves (2) e Måneskin (2), tutti con nomination multiple oltre alle prime nomination per Anitta, Becky G, Dove Cameron, Karol G, ITZY, JID, Muni Long, Tems, Wet Leg e tanti altri.

A partire dal 27 luglio, è stato possibile votare gli artisti preferiti nelle 22 categorie gender-neutral, incluse "Video of the Year," "Artist of the Year," "Best Collaboration" e nelle due nuove categorie "Best Longform Video" e "Best Metaverse Performance," visitando il sito vote.mtv.com fino a venerdì 19 agosto 2022. Il voto per "Best New Artist" è rimasto attivo durante lo show di domenica 28 agosto 2022. Le candidature per le categorie social tra cui ""Group of the Year" e "Song of Summer" saranno annunciate in un secondo momento.
