TRAMA

Monica Phelps viene uccisa misteriosamente, l'unico ad aver assistito all'omicidio è il figlio, che si era nascosto nell'armadio. Le indagini vengono subito avviate.

Nathan, a 14 year-old boy, is traumatized when he witnesses his mother's rape and murder from inside a closet. The crew investigates the woman's murder while Benson struggles to keep the poor boy's spirits up and keep him on board as a necessary piece to the puzzle. Benson and Stabler then learn that the boy's only remaining kin, Aunt Gina, was also murdered in similar fashion months ago with matching bullets to those used on Nathan's mom. Both investigations turn up large amounts of cash that Benson and Stabler trace back to self-proclaimed do-gooder Terri Carthage, a man known for his financial generosity toward struggling female drug addicts in exchange for sex. When Nathan fails to identify Carthage's voice in the police audio lineup, Benson and Stabler happen across 16 year-old past victim Katie McKenna who agrees to participate in a sting operation to catch Carthage in the act. Carthage is booked on several crimes including statutory rape, but lack of evidence prevents murder charges. Carthage is temporarily freed and allowed to go to work where Nathan, feeling guilty for failing to identify Carthage in the police lineup, arrives and shoots Carthage dead in his tracks. With the focus of the investigation now on Nathan, prosecutors fight hard to try him as an adult with strong backing from the National Gun Association, intent on preventing the defense from blaming Nathan's action on past gun exposure. Benson goes beyond her job description when she throws in her own opinion on the witness stand in Nathan's defense. It appears as though hotshot attorney Geddes has played his cards right by attaching a civil suit against Nathan, but when defense attorney Devere brings in psych specialist Dr. Young to support Nathan's gun violence-caused instability, the civil suit is thrown out and the criminal trial is dismissed with prejudice.
