TRAMA

Charlie and Mo have travelled to Qatar with President Payton, who's scheduled to meet the prime minister to discuss the future of American military bases in the country. As her motorcade from the airport arrives at the United States embassy, a lone Arabic man on a motorbike speeds for the building's gate. The Marines on guard fire, causing him to wipe out. The exploding engine sets the man's arm on fire. As Marines rush to put out the flames, he cries over and over that he works for the CIA. Later, the man sits in an interrogation room in the embassy. He has been identified as Rayst Kamal. Charlie and Mo watch him on a monitor from a separate room. Mo mentions that the CIA has no record of him working for the agency. Charlie shrugs. "Wouldn't be the first time a case officer ran an asset off the books," she says. Careful, Charlie. Don't give away too much, even to your friends. While the two agents prepare to debrief Kamal, the president meets with the Qatari prime minister. The PM wants her to hand over Kamal, as it seems he's under investigation for stealing state secrets. The president hems and haws - technically, the embassy is American soil, and Kamal is being held as a security threat. The prime minister threatens Payton: turn over Kamal or all the American military bases in Qatar will be shut down. The guy must have stolen one heck of a secret... In Washington, the rest of Charlie's team debates the best way to draw out Al Moosari - now nicknamed the Moose and/or Bullwinkle - the cameraman whom they determined secretly works for Fatah. Kurt and Greer disagree sharply with Lucas, who wants to sit on the information that Al Moosari is still alive. It's hard to be the new guy - but with Charlie and Navarro out of town, Lucas is in charge. In a barren room, Nick is chained to a bar over his head, kneeling in a stress position. He has been beaten and tortured, and to make it worse, his captors have left bright lights on him and are blasting some sort of death metal at full volume. One of the captors, wearing a mask that looks just like Nick, turns off the music to ask about the time Nick interrogated Fatah. Who else was there? Nick is cocky, brushing off the queries. Then his captor lights a blowtorch and asks again. Maybe that will do it... Nick's torture continues as his captor shows him a video of Charlie pocketing the passports with her photo she found hidden in his apartment. Not wanting to run away with Nick? That might hurt worst of all. In Qatar, Charlie and Mo question Kamal. He tells them that he works for the Qatari Armed Forces in allocation and procurement, and became aware of criminal dealings in the military. Having been approached by Ben, his CIA handler, in a bar, and having confessed to his suspicions and unhappiness, he agreed to steal evidence and give it to the Americans. He left the evidence with his brother until he could speak to his handler again. And why isn't his handler there? Mo and Charlie glide past the question easily, and why not? Kamal is obviously the trusting sort. Charlie reports the results of Kamal's debrief to the president. It's her opinion that someone suckered Kamal into a "false flag" operation, manipulating him into handing over intel. And the intel he claims to have could blow a hole in U.S.-Qatari relations, as it supposedly proves Qatar has been selling U.S.-made weapons to Ar Rissalah - the enormous terrorist network the CIA has just uncovered. Charlie suggests retrieving Kamal's intel. The problem is getting the wanted man out of the completely locked-down embassy, since his brother will only turn over the information he's holding to Kamal himself. Charlie tells Payton that she's inclined to trust Kamal, which puts the president in a mood. Once again, she's supposed to just trust Charlie? Mo borrows a car and rams through a gate on an ostensibly urgent CIA mission. The Qatari police stationed outside chase her down, giving Charlie and Kamal a chance to slip out unnoticed to meet his brother at a shopping mall. Back at CIA, Kurt travels to a safe house in Baltimore to meet with a "walk-in" - someone who came in off the street with what she claims is valuable info. The woman is calling herself Melissa Anchez, but unknown to Kurt, she's the hacker who built a program for Charlie's phone that allowed her to track down the phone her blackmailer used to send the photo of Fatah. "Melissa" tells Kurt she had hacked a secure communications satellite and stumbled across a great quantity of data about "various nefarious groups you've been failing to track." She's happy to hand it over... in exchange for an "obscene amount of money" in an offshore account. It's good to have a marketable skill like hacking. Kurt accepts Melissa's hard drive, uploads it to the CIA mainframe and has Dash start analyzing. Finding a treasure trove of data on Ar Rissalah communications, Dash tells Kurt to give Melissa whatever she wants. Kurt has a theory: a photo of Al Moosari indicates recent eye surgery. Now he just has to convince Lucas to run with it - which is not an easy task, since alcoholic Lucas has fallen off the wagon. He's been trying to hide it, but Kurt knows the signs and needs Lucas' head in the game. He plops a bottle of bourbon on Lucas' desk and tells him to take a few drinks and get himself straight... or go home. Later, Lucas tells Kurt that he was right about Al Moosari. He did have recent a corneal transplant and they should be able to track him down though necessary anti-rejection meds... and through Al Moosari, they hope to find Fatah. As for the little incident with Lucas' alcoholism, Kurt's willing to keep his secret... as long as Lucas steers clear of Mo. In an upscale mall in Qatar, Charlie and Kamal go to his brother's clothing store to retrieve the intel. Stunned, Charlie grabs Kamal and leads him out the back way to a freight elevator. When the doors open, the man Kamal knows as Ben, his CIA handler, emerges. "Where are you going with that?" Ben asks, indicating the folder full of intel. Then he goes for his gun, but Charlie's quicker. She shoots Ben, grabs Kamal and the intel, and flees the mall. Sheila sends the file's contents to the D.C. team, who use Melissa's back door to quickly determine Kamal's evidence is fake. Charlie theorizes that members of the Qatari military made up the information to try and blow the deal on the military bases and get the Americans out of the Qatar. And it almost worked. Both DP and the president are furious and lay into Charlie. Fake intel, a huge terrorist network rising under the CIA's nose... DP thinks the Qataris are about to get their way. Payton wants to turn over Kamal, situation solved, but Charlie wants to protect him as payback for services rendered. When DP tells her to get her priorities straight, she explodes. Everything she does is for the United States of America. The fake intelligence was necessary for the president to make an informed decision, and DP should never ever tell Charlie how to do her job. Payton asks DP to leave the room, then focuses on Charlie. A president is only as good as the people who serve her; Charlie needs to tell her what happened in Kabul. Charlie tearfully admits that she honestly doesn't remember, but she would never to anything to intentionally harm Payton... who dismisses Charlie as her briefer! In Washington, Melissa Anchez approaches Kurt outside his gym. She solved a problem the CIA didn't know they had today. Why? She hands him an envelope full of cash and suggests he come work for her employers. Kurt tries to give the money back, but Melissa backs away. Why doesn't he take that hottie on the seventh floor out to dinner. What's her name again...? Maureen? If only Charlie could recover her memories from the night of the ambush in Kabul. Right now, based on her memories, it's possible that she could have shot Aaron. Mo has an answer, but it's dangerous and illegal... Charlie meets with Kamal. She's used the last favor she may ever get to call in to secure his Canadian citizenship. Mo secures a drug cocktail, which should bring Charlie's memories back. Sitting in a tub full of water, tied down so she won't hurt herself or someone else, Charlie lets the drugs flow into her arm. And she starts to remember... Kabul. The ambush. Someone pulled her from her overturned vehicle. It's Fatah. In the road, Aaron sees them and raises his gun to shoot the terrorist. Fatah pulls Charlie's gun from her pocket and shoots Aaron first. Then he shoots and kills another terrorist coming after Charlie. He whispers, "When one can act, one should act as a liberator." Then he's gone. When Charlie awakens from her stupor, she knows how Aaron died. More importantly, she knows Fatah is still her asset.
