TRAMA
Like an ornithologist after a rare bird, Max stalks Dylan through the halls of Chambers Academy. Kristina finds him jotting notes and pulling Dylan's crumpled drawing of a horse out of the trash. Max claims he's studying Dylan per his father's advice that common interests are the foundation of a romantic relationship. Since he hates drawing, he's chosen to develop an interest in horses. That night, Julia and Chris are on a date, on their way to try out a new French restaurant, when Julia spies some of the moms from school and ducks behind a potted ficus. Chris knows it's a little late in the game to be hiding from moms, but he suggests they try another restaurant. Amber literally bumps into scruffy IT guy Griffin, who quickly turns the spark of flirtation into a request for her phone number. It's not long before he texts her, asking to meet for a drink, which immediately poses a conundrum - should Amber tell Griffin she's pregnant? Amber is charmed when Griffin takes her to the dog park, even though he doesn't have a dog. Afterwards, Amber stops by Drew's dorm to confirm what she already knows. Now that she likes Griffin, she has to tell him the truth. After another great date and a sweet first kiss, Amber takes Griffin back to her apartment. They're standing in the hallway when she tells him about her "baggage," and within seconds, he's gone. Amber decides it's the perfect time to rid her life of all embargoed pregnancy items and give her choice weed and vodka to Drew. She can't have it, just like she can't have a relationship. Luckily, Drew's full of sound advice: Amber's life isn't over, she's just doing things out of order, that's all. She'll live to love again. Crosby is livid to discover Jasmine has put a boot on his motorcycle, which isn't coming off until he calms down and explains what's happening with him. He's still grumpy when the family gathers at Adam and Kristina's for a barbecue. Adam has no sympathy, since he's focused on Max. When Max tells Zeek that he likes a girl, relating Adam's advice to develop common interests, the floodgates of historically questionable advice open. Crosby reviews the bases, and Zeek toasts the virility of the Braverman men. Worried, Kristina pulls Adam aside. Max's behavior is verging on inappropriate and Dylan isn't going to return Max's affections. Adam is going to have to temper Max's enthusiasm. Spying Chris, who's dropped by with some documents for Julia to sign, Adam insists he stay for a burger and basketball. Crosby sits out the game with Zeek, and both of them grump over their restrictive wives. Camille has taken Zeek off the road too, and the drives to his physical therapy sessions have been inexorably slow. Seizing the opportunity for a little father-son time, Crosby offers to take Zeek to his next therapy session - a day of freedom from wives! Adam and Kristina sit Max down for a conversation about relationships, since they are experts. And sometimes, in relationships, people can like each other at different levels. For instance Adam and Kristina both like each other at a 5 on a scale of 1 to 5, but when they first met, Kristina liked Adam at a 2, though he liked her at a 5. Kristina bristles when Adam agrees with Max's deduction that the scale of affection is fluid, it can change. The conversation to temper expectation, has morphed into steam for Max's engine of love. At lunch, Max corners Dylan to ask the quantitative representation of her feelings for him. When Dylan opts for a 2, Max figures he can work with it, since he'll have roughly a decade to change her mind. Across town, Joel takes Sydney and Victor for lunch. Both kids are brimming with admiration for Chris; Victor has decided to quit baseball in favor of basketball, which Chris thinks is better. Joel's quick to figure out what's happening, and shuts down the conversation by saying that with the exception of their mother, most lawyers have questionable morals. Later, Joel shows up at Julia's office with a full head of steam. She had no right to introduce Chris to the kids without Joel's say-so. Julia lawyers up: the meeting was an accident and it wasn't her intention. Further, she doesn't really know the status of her relationship with Chris, and it's really none of Joel's business. Crosby and Zeek's day of freedom starts with a wild joyride to physical therapy. Zeek insists Crosby drop him off, but Crosby sneaks into the physical therapy room to spy Zeek stumbling on the treadmill. It's a sobering moment, and rather than make his presence known, Crosby slinks back to the waiting room. Zeek is exhausted after his workout, but rather than go home, Crosby decides they're heading to a bar, even though Zeek can't drink. Zeek is rising to the occasion, reminiscing about his more virile days, when Camille calls to berate him - what is he doing in a bar? Zeek insists he's enjoying his day of freedom and he'll come home when he's good and ready. Hanging up, he tells Crosby to order another round. Hours later, Crosby's too drunk to drive, and lamenting how tough his life has become. Zeek can relate. He's had no money and a house full of kids, been pushed and pulled in different directions. Crosby has to try to enjoy life; it goes by fast. Jasmine's super pissed when she gets the call to pick up Zeek and Crosby. Zeek apologizes while Crosby passes out in the minivan, and he agrees with Jasmine. They're both worried about Crosby. Max has been to the library to take out several books on how to pick up women by so-called experts. Kristina levels a withering gaze at Adam, accusing him of thwarting their plan. Dylan isn't going to like Max the way he likes her! But Adam can't see it. Why can't Dylan like Max? Adam has to think it's possible. Kristina doesn't like it, but she comes around, joining Adam for a talk with Max on how to utilize his best qualities in the romance department. Across town, Chris and Julia meet up for another date. Even though he doesn't cook, Chris has bought groceries in a bid to keep them out of restaurants and the prying eyes of gossiping moms. He likes what they have together and wants to keep going at whatever speed makes Julia comfortable. Charmed, Julia decides it's time to screw the moms - they're going back to the French restaurant!
