TRAMA

College student Sarah Clancy is found dead at a landfill: She's wearing a Diane von Furstenberg original wrap dress, the same dress she's wearing in Polaroids found near her body at a garbage dump. The murder weapon found nearby is also straight out of the '70s: A fondue fork! Her roommate, Jennifer, tells Henry (Ioan Gruffudd) and Jo (Alana De La Garza) that she and Sarah had been very close, but that Sarah had recently become extremely secretive. She'd also dropped all of her classes except the one on sexuality taught by Professor Molly Dawes, aka, Iona Payne (guest star Hilarie Burton), the dominatrix. Henry is pleased to see Molly again and the feeling is mutual. Molly tells him and Jo she knew Sarah was involved in an unusual role-playing relationship, but it was one Sarah said felt safe. At the dump site, Lucas (Joel David Moore) finds a batch of junk mail which leads them to an apartment that's decked out as if it were still the '70s. They also find another Polaroid, one that's actually from the '70s of a woman wearing the same leopard-print wrap dress as Sarah. Police techs recover a video of Sarah in which she appears to be auditioning for her role-playing relationship. Jo's already turned down Henry's request to work with Molly on the psychological aspects of the case but now she agrees that her expertise may be valuable. Molly tells them the man they're looking for is in this mid-60s and was looking to recreate a specific memory – and to exercise control. Their investigation leads them to Mr. Neville, who rented the apartment in 1979. He denies knowing Sarah but seems moved by the woman in the older photo. When Henry pretends to destroy the photo, he begs him to stop. He admits the woman in the Polaroid was his late wife, Caitlyn, who died in 1981 of breast cancer. Jo asks him where he was the night of Sarah's murder. He not only admits to being there, but says, "I think I killed her." At police HQ, he says it all started when he first saw Sarah and realized how much she looked like his late wife. He rented the old apartment and remodeled it to make the fantasy "as real as possible." On the night of Sarah's murder, he got angry when her cell phone rang, since he forbade anything modern. He confesses to losing his temper and stabbing her in the neck with the fondue fork. Lt. Reece (Lorraine Toussaint) is pleased, but Henry insists Neville isn't telling the truth since the motion he used in his recreation of the stabbing doesn't fit the evidence. Jo thinks Henry is just looking for a reason to spend more time with Molly and says he should just ask her out. Henry does just that and confides in Molly that he can't let the case go. She says the best way to understand someone's fantasy is "to inhabit it." They go to Neville's apartment and pretend to be Neville and Sarah, which involves a lot of making out. Henry spies a stained sofa cushion and, based on the odor, concludes that Henry was drugged. He and Molly end up at the morgue, where he tests the sofa cushion and finds it positive for ketamine, a powerful sedative. He theorizes that someone drugged Henry and set him up to take the fall for the murder. Lt. Reece doesn't want to re-open a closed case, but Jo says it can't hurt to talk to Neville again. Even when they tell him he might have been drugged, he still insists he's guilty. Henry guesses he's covering up for someone: His drug addict daughter, Cecily. There's no love lost with her father, but she not only has an alibi, she gives them another suspect: A different blond woman who was dressing up as her mother! The other blond turns out to be Sarah's roommate, Jennifer. Jo and Henry realize that the killer has to be someone who was obsessed with Sarah and that can only be Jennifer. Meanwhile, Jennifer is in Molly's office, telling her she wants to be a psych major. Molly is unnerved when Jennifer confesses that she's wearing Sarah's vintage coat because she wants to feel close to her. She ushers Jennifer out and tries to phone Henry, but Jennifer sneaks back in and knocks her out. At Jennifer's apartment, Henry finds Sarah's class schedule and realizes that Jennifer's gone after Molly. Jennifer tells Molly that she didn't mean to kill Sarah, she was just trying to save her from "that disgusting old man." When Jo and Henry arrive looking for Molly, Jennifer holds the knife to her throat so she won't call out. Henry breaks down the door but Molly's already been stabbed and is bleeding profusely. At the hospital, they're told Molly will be fine and Jo convinces the nurse to let Henry in to see her. Molly confesses she's "always harbored a damsel in distress fantasy" and that "being saved by a dashing doctor was kind of hot." Henry tells her he cares for her but she realizes he's not ready to be in love. "Whoever she was, she hurt you real bad," she says sadly. Henry flashes back to 1982, when Abigail was now much older and horribly self-conscious about being seen with a "younger man." After a disastrous anniversary dinner in which she was mistaken for his mother, Abigail told him she couldn't go on like this. At least Henry and Abe (Judd Hirsch) still have their memories of Abigail.
