TRAMA

Political appointee Lawrence Creff's unattractive secrets are exposed on live TV, thanks to The Faceless hacktivist group. The next morning, a member of the group, Eric Shaw, is found dead in bed. Since the victim was a cyberterrorist, Keith and Irene from the cybercrimes division arrive to help with the case. Lucas (Joel David Moore), naturally, develops a crush on Irene, but she's not interested in him or a tour of the morgue. The murder weapon was the digital thermostat: It was hacked to turn off the pilot light and Eric was killed by natural gas. Henry (Ioan Gruffudd) determines that even with the gas flowing for several hours, it wouldn't have been enough to kill Eric. He shaves off Eric's beard and finds contusions around the mouth that indicate he was smothered. The killer had to have been in the room. Keith and Irene arrest Creff, since his computer delivered the lethal command and he definitely had motive. Henry and Jo (Alana De La Garza) are sure he's been framed by the real murderer but interrogate him anyway. His mention of Pasta Nero – which happens to be Eric's last meal -- leads them to the restaurant that hosted his fundraiser. At the restaurant, Henry and Jo find Liz, who flees on her motorcycle. She manages to change the traffic lights to red as Jo follows in hot pursuit. In the ensuing pile-up, she gets away, but not before dropping her phone. She's ID'd as Liz Chamberlin, but all her information is fake. However, the print she left on her phone leads to her real identity: A former Cal-Tech student with a criminal record. Her last text was to a cybercriminal named Warlock, aka, Bernard. He says he didn't kill Eric: He and Liz were both at his apartment, but he left after telling Liz that Eric was cheating on her. Henry gets a message on his lab computer from Liz, who's done some digging and found that all his information is also fake. She threatens to expose him unless he gives her an official death certificate so she can disappear. Henry flashes back to when an aging Nora (guest star Jane Alexander) – his first wife who'd had him committed after he admitted the truth about his immortality – found him again. Now that she knew he was telling the truth, she wanted to share the "miracle" with the world. No one believed her and she was on the verge of being committed herself when she showed up with a gun, determined to prove her claim. She fired, but Henry's new love stepped in front of him and was killed instead. Meanwhile, Keith and Irene are scanning all video surveillance in the city for Liz: If she walks down a city street, they'll know. Liz shows up at the antique shop. Henry says he won't help a murderer, but she insists she didn't kill Eric. She calls his cheating simply "social engineering," seducing the right person so he could get the codes to the city's information grid. She begs him to help her: She's a fugitive and without his help, she might be killed next. But she doesn't just rely on his good faith: If he doesn't cooperate, she'll tell Jo he's a fraud. He's prepared a death certificate, but instead of giving it to her, he tears it up. She leaves the shop and is about to hit "send" to Jo when she's hit by a car. Jo assumes that Liz, who's now on life support, intended to kill herself by crossing against the light. But based on her injuries, Henry concludes another hacker tried to kill her by rigging the signals. Irene assumes it was Bernard and that he'll try to kill Liz again by hacking into the hospital's life support system, so she has Liz disconnected. They arrest Bernard, but he tells them he couldn't have done it: The codes were changed so he no longer has access. When Jo asks him who changed the codes he says: "The NYPD. You guys." Back at the hospital, Henry stays with Liz in case she wakes up, as does Irene. Henry correctly guesses that Irene was the woman Eric seduced and that when she found out about his betrayal, she killed him. She confesses, saying she returned to Eric's apartment to wipe his computer. That's when she found him still alive and finished him off in person. She tells Henry that after seeing Liz at his antique store, she dug into his records and knows they're phony. Liz starts crashing: No one is coming to her aid since, at Irene's order, she was disconnected from the hospital system. Irene tells Henry, "Let her go," saying, "our secrets die with her." She unplugs the life support and tells Henry that if he saves Liz, she'll destroy him. Henry pushes the emergency alarm and begins CPR, knowing full well what the consequences might be. Irene slips out in the confusion. Irene tells Keith, "It's over. The secret's out." She steps in front of a speeding ambulance and is killed instantly. Jo tells Henry she got a strange text from Liz, one that suggested she look into Henry's past. Henry is weighing how to explain everything when she tells him she's disappointed he's kept secrets from her… like that he went to Oxford! Henry is confused, until he gets another message from Liz, who's now recovering in the hospital. She tells him she "filled in some blanks" in his digital record and that it's unlikely anyone else will find out the truth now. She says she won't do any more digging either, explaining, "Everybody deserves their secrets."
